Leigh Wood ready for first professional title

Updated 19th June 2013

Leigh Wood can't wait to "get in there" and fight for his first professional title this Saturday.

Challenging Ian Bailey for the vacant British Masters featherweight title, Leigh has left nothing to chance with his preparation and is excited to put on a big performance in front of his home crowd at the Clifton Leisure Centre, Nottingham.

Above: Leigh Wood talks ahead of his fight for the vacant British Masters featherweight title.

"I feel great training's gone well - I've had eight weeks notice and I've lived like a Priest," Leigh said.

"It's probably the first time ever that I've done every single thing to the book and those little things add up - I haven't been ill since I can't remember so living well, eating well and it's definitely going to show on the night - I've not left anything to chance.

"You've got to be there to see it - I'm not great with words but I've trained hard, I'm looking forward to it - I'm more excited than nervous for the first time, I just want to get in there."

In Bailey, he meets a man that has taken the likes of fellow Ingle Gym fighter Kid Galahad six rounds along with Carl Frampton and Lee Selby.

Fighting over 10 rounds, Leigh knows that it will take his best performance yet to get passed the tough 29-year-old.

"I haven't overanalysed him, I've looked at him and I've seen what he's good at, he doesn't really change much - he's the same Ian Bailey that comes every time," Leigh said.

"He gives 110 percent, he's on you and he won't leave you alone - nobody has had an easy night with Ian Bailey and you've got to expect the 10 round distance with him coming at me, trying to take my head off basically.

"He's going to come forward, he's going to swing but I've got a game plan and my style will suit him down to the ground so I'm not going to reveal my strategy but I'm ready.

"I've got to be on it to beat this kid because he is good - his record isn't great but he's a better fighter than that suggests so I'm up for this - I'm more than up for it."

With a perfect professional record of eight fights, with eight wins and two knockouts, Leigh-thal is fully focussed on making it nine from nine with a first title.

The 24-year-old Nottingham man is fighting at the same venue where he made his pro debut and

"I think the last time I boxed on a small hall show in Nottingham was my debut, the same place I'm boxing at which is quite sweet and I'm top of the show this time," Leigh said.

"Those big shows like the Froch undercards are great in Nottingham but this is more personal - I'll have like 300/350 people there and mainly there for me, so it's more personal and I don't want to send the fans home disappointed, I want to put on a good show, a good performance.

“It seems like these last eight weeks have dragged because I've done everything perfect, so let's do it, let's have it!”

Leigh weighs in at the Elwes Arms tomorrow at 1pm where you will also be able to purchase tickets for the fight
