Patient Mcassey fixed on 2015 return

Updated 8th December 2014

Tom ‘2Classy’ Mcassey is delighted to be back training in the Ingle Gym and on the road to recovery.

The 6’2” light heavyweight prospect, who last fought in March due to a broken right hand sustained in the bout, is patiently building back to full fitness and aiming to be back in the ring early next year.

Above: Tom talks about his injury, recovery and 2015.

“It’s brilliant to be back in the gym to be honest,” Tom said.

“A few downs on the way, obviously my hand injury in my last fight - my best win so far but also my worst injury.

“I’ve just started getting back on the bags and I’m just going to increase my training bit by bit until it feels able to spar with and when I can start sparring with it, after a few weeks, hopefully get a fight date.

“That’s what we all want, the people that come and support me, hopefully they’ll be happy to know I’ve got a date – early next year is what we’re looking at.”

Tom, 23, broke his right hand during the second round of his compelling four round contest against the durable Arvydas Trizno.

The undefeated Sheffielder proved his heart with an unrelenting display, continuing to fight through the pain to extend his unbeaten record to five straight victories.

“I was fighting a tough guy in Trizno, he put his head down, I’ve cracked him on the top of the head and my hand was broken,” Tom said.

“I had to win the fight one-handed, but at least I got through it, you know, looking at the positive side.

“Some people might have spewed it there and gone back to the corner or just want the doctor to call it off, but I’m never going to do that, never would have done it, never going to do it.

“It’s just a case of on to the next one, bit of time out and recovery.

“I’ve had to have an operation on it where I’ve had the cartilage taken out and the bone fused and a metal plate put in and screwed.

“I’m hoping to be back sparring as soon as possible really, I’m already sick of hitting the bag and I’ve only been back doing it two weeks, so as soon as I feel able to spar I’m going to spar, as I just want to punch someone now, its been a long time.

“It will probably be a few more weeks, I’m not going to be daft and rush it - I’m just having to be patient at the minute, I’m a bit wound up, but it has got to be done as I don’t want to go in and make it worse or do it again and make myself have more time out of the ring.

“By this time next year I’d like to have some sort of title, that would be nice and everyone wants to win a title don’t they? Keep winning most of all, get the wins and keep trying to put on good performances.”
