Dominic Ingle on Brook vs Alexander

Updated 6th December 2012

Ingle Gym's Dominic Ingle believes Kell Brook will "open the eyes of America," after it was announced that the Sheffielder will take on Devon Alexander for the IBF world welterweight title.

After knocking Hector Saldivia out in three rounds, Brook became the mandatory challenger for the American's world title, who will now make his first defence against the Sheffield man in either Las Vegas or New York.

"It's fantastic news, finally Kell Brook has got the opportunity to fight for the world title, an opportunity he's been looking for, for a long time," Ingle said.
"I think Devon Alexander will be as awkward as he can be.

"He does what he has to do to win, just like Timothy Bradley does.

"I don't think their styles are going to gel; it's just a case of who can get the job done and I think Kell can.

"I think he can do a number on Devon Alexander and look good doing it and do it in Alexander's back yard and open the eyes of America to Kell Brook."

Alexander won the belt against Randall Bailey in an uneventful fight in New York, the same night Kell dispatched Argentinean Saldivia in Sheffield.

"I saw the fight, I wasn't impressed, Alexander stole the fight, Bailey's an old guy, he's 38-years-old, he can punch with the right hand," Ingle said.

"Alexander went in and stole the fight off him and didn't look good doing it, so looking at that fight I wouldn't have any concerns with Kell fighting Devon Alexander."

In 2009 the American beat Junior Witter at the Agua Caliente Casino, California, for the vacant WBC light welterweight title after Junior retired with a left hand injury.

But Ingle sees this as a very different fight.

"Devon Alexander was a 21-year-old at 10 stone, Junior was 35-years-old and Junior made a hard fight for himself in that fight and the result actually flattered Devon Alexander," Ingle said.

"With Kell, he's 26, Devon Alexander is about 25; Devon Alexander's fighting somebody more or less his own age and I think that's where the problem is going to be for him.

"Kell is ambitious, he's game, he likes to have a fight and he will seize the opportunity with both hands.

Brook ended doubts over his fitness, raised by his points win over American Carson Jones, by knocking out Saldivia with a stiff left jab and Ingle feels that the performance will act as a catalyst for future fights.

"I think after the fight with Carson Jones, the realisation that Kell had to do things right - it came to fruition when he boxed Hector Saldivia," Ingle said.

"He trained hard for that fight and the result spoke for itself, he will maintain that sort of training pattern for Devon Alexander.

"If he goes into the ring in the same condition, the same mindset, with the same confidence he did against Hector Saldivia, Kell will be world champion."
