Kell Brook to defend IBF title against Jo Jo Dan

Updated 22th January 2015

Kell Brook will make the maiden defence of his IBF world welterweight title against mandatory challenger Jo Jo Dan.

The 28-year-old Ingle Gym star won the title over Shawn Porter in August and he returns to the ring against the Romanian at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on March 28.

“It’s a fight against the mandatory, the number one, it’s great to get it out of the way now so I’m clear for the summer,” Kell said.

“Don’t worry about that, in the summer I’ll be pushing for those massive names in the UK, the big big fights and that’s what we all want.”

Kell returns to the ring after a tumultuous time following his world title win.

The Sheffield welterweight king’s career and life were left in the balance after sustaining a serious leg injury in a horrifying machete attack while on holiday with his family.

But now, having made a swift recovery, Kell is back in the gym and hunting the biggest names in a star studded division.

“It’s unbelievable, you know, laid there not thinking that I’d ever be able to box again, to be stood here now fit and healthy and promoting my next fight, my homecoming – I can’t put into words ho I’m feeling,” Kell said.

“I’ve had very bad pain in the leg at the start, obviously trying to get back into training, but now, it’s brilliant.

“Believe you me I’m back in that gym and Dominic (Ingle) is pushing me to the absolute max, so there is no issue with the leg at all.

“To be back here, fighting in my home town, it feels unbelievable.

“I’ve put it behind me, I can’t be thinking about that because it’s happened, there’s nothing I can do about it, I’ve got to move forward, move on and get myself in physically and mentally the best place possible for March 28th.

“I feel I’m already there with it, I’ve got some more weeks to pump through things.

“We’re here, I’m training hard and I’ve got a big fight in March.”

Kell faces Canadian based Romanian Ionut Dan Ion (Jo Jo Dan), a man that has fought his way to the number one position, boasting 34 wins with 18 knockouts.

But the Sheffield man feels this is the perfect test to showcase his recovery, skills and desire.

“He’s in a whole heap of trouble,” Kell said.

“It’s my homecoming, all my home fans, my first defence; nothing is going to stop me.

“I’ve got my mandatory, Jo Jo Dan, he’s very awkward, very tough customer who wants that world title, so my fans are in for a real treat.”
