Hearn backing Kell to shine on an emotional homecoming

Updated 28th January 2015

Promoter Eddie Hearn “can’t wait” for the “spine-tingling” moment that Kell Brook enters a sell-out Sheffield Motorpoint Arena on March 28.

The 28-year-old Sheffield welterweight star is set to make not only the maiden defence of his IBF world title, but also compete for the first time since he was left fighting for his life after a knife attack in Tenerife in September.

“I’m chuffed for Kell to be in this position,” Hearn said.

“We didn’t know if he’d ever fight again and now he is and I’m so pleased that he’s working as hard as he is.

“I think the real emotion will come when he walks out at Sheffield Arena in front of a sell-out crowd.

“It’s going to be spine-tingling stuff watching him walk out in front of that many people, I cant wait, we’ve only just announced a couple of fights and there’s some really big fights and fighters to come on the bill.”

Last year proved to be a year of great contrast for Kell: hitting a career high win by ripping the world title away from Shawn Porter in Carson, California, before sustaining life-threatening injuries in a savage machete attack while on holiday with his family in Fuerteventura.

Talks of glamour fights against the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez, Marcos Maidana and fellow British fighter Amir Khan, turned to thoughts of well being and recovery.

But now, Kell has made a full recovery ahead of a homecoming fight in Sheffield and Hearn is staggered at how quickly ‘The Special One’ has bounced back to face Romanian Jo Jo Dan on March 28.

“He’s a bit of a physical freak in that respect," Hearn said.

“The way even his skin and his muscular tissue have healed has been incredible, but the way he’s hitting his numbers in the gym, his times on the track are all ahead of schedule.

“It’s remarkable that he’s even walking again properly, let alone fighting properly again, but at the moment he seems stronger, more determined and fitter than ever.”

Jo Jo Dan, 33, is Brook’s mandatory challenger and boasts an impressive 34 wins of his 36 bouts, beating Canadian Kevin Bizier in his last outing in December.

A tough opponent for Kell and Hearn knows he must not be underestimated with the potential fights, such as the all British showdown with Amir Khan, that lay ahead should Brook come through victorious.

“It’s a great fight for him, get the mandatory done and then move onto a huge fight in the summer, but for now buzzing to get Dan signed and I can’t wait for the 28th.

"I expect him (Dan) to show the same desire that Kell Brook showed against Shawn Porter, a very entertaining fighter, a very tough fighter and a great opportunity for him.

"He’s earned this shot, he’s number one contender in the division, you’ve got to give him that credit and that respect and it’s a really tough fight for Kell.

"If he (Kell) doesn’t win then he wont come through and get those super fights.

“Now there’s more on the line; he’s world champion, there’s so many big fights ahead of him, but ultimately, I think, he knows now that he can’t afford to let anything go, let anything slip.

“All those big names that are ahead of him: Marquez, Bradley, Maidana, Mayweather, Pacquiao, Khan, there’s so many great fights for him and he’s world champion, it’s not a case of, ‘We can make those fights and we can challenge,’ no, they’re going to challenge us! Which is a great place for him to be in.

“I think in champion stakes, of course, Khan’s not a world champion and Kell Brook is, Amir’s the bigger name, I don’t think anyone’s disputing that, but they can both make a lot of money in the fight, so let’s get around a table.

“But, I’ve said before, Amir’s petrified to lose to Kell Brook and that’s the truth, you know he can lose to a Pacquiao or Mayweather and come back, but he can’t lose to Kell Brook and come back, and he will lose to Kell Brook, so maybe he wont fight him?

“Be great, you know, Marquez, Maidana, all those big fights in the summer and they’re going to happen, but he must beat Jo Jo Dan first.

“It’s a really tough fight, especially coming back from what he’s just been through, but I think he’s going to shine in this fight.”
