Johnny Nelson on Kell Brook

Updated 1st December 2012

Nelson: “That fight is very, very real” as Brook eyes showdown with Khan

It took Kell Brook just three rounds to knock out Argentina’s Hector Saldivia in the aptly named ‘This is it’ bill at Sheffield Motorpoint Arena on Saturday, to become the mandatory challenger for the IBF world welterweight title.

But, with a world championship bout in the offing, all the talk is of a possible showdown with long term rival Amir Khan.

With Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn revealing negotiations are already underway, Ingle Gym talked to former fighter and former WBO cruiserweight champion, Johnny Nelson about the possibility of the all - British clash.

“That fight is very, very real – I was at the boxing writers’ dinner and Amir’s dad and his manager were sat on the next table and they are very up for this,” said Nelson.

“I think it could be amazing, potentially we could have a blockbuster on our hands and that’s why it’s good times and good things to look forward to.

“We’ve seen trilogies before, we’ve seen rematches and I think the fight would be that good this could be the beginning of one of them.”

Brook and Khan have seemed destined to clash ever since the Bolton fighter stated his intent to move up to the welterweight division where the 26-year-old Sheffielder operates.

Both fighters claim superiority over the other, stemming from when they sparred together as amateurs and the intense rivalry reached fever pitch after the pair both appeared on Sky Sports’ flagship boxing programme Ringside.

“When the cameras stopped rolling on Ringside, there was some atmosphere – you know you knew these guys wouldn’t even share the same greenroom, they wouldn’t even sit in the same chair,” Nelson said.

“There was a vibe in the room so in that you assume there is a problem, so it really is the ingredients for a cracking fight.

“I see it possibly as another Eubank Benn contest because you’ve got two individuals that believe they’ll win, two individuals that believe they are the better fighter.

“Two individuals that have no respect for one another and really don’t like each other.”

Khan, 25, is rebuilding his career following a high-profile split from trainer Freddie Roach and the loss of his light-welterweight world titles.

His next fight is against Carlos Molina as he attempts to put a devastating fourth round knockout defeat to Danny Garcia behind him, with a possible showdown with Brook scheduled for 2013.

Brook on the other hand, dispelled concerns of waning fitness levels arising from his hard-fought victory over American Carson Jones, by demolishing highly regarded fighter Hector Saldivia.

The Sheffield welterweight twice put the South American on the canvas to delight the 6,000 strong home support at the weekend.

Just 28 seconds into the third round a solid left jab left Saldivia unable to continue and Brook on the cusp of a world title.

Brook and promoter Eddie Hearn both stress the importance of winning the IBF belt they have worked so hard in becoming the mandatory fighter for, but explain that the Khan fight is too big to be ignored.

On the outcome, should the fight go ahead in 2013, Nelson sees it as a clash of experience as to who comes out on top.

“I’ll tell you now, if this fight happened today I’d side with Amir Khan because he has the experience to pull it off, just,” Nelson said.

“If I was Amir Kahn I’d want that fight right now because in six months time Kell Brook wins it - Kell Brook then believes in everything he’s got.

“He (Brook) might think, ‘God I want to embrace this kind of training and this way to prepare for a fight,’ and that’s what the problem is for Amir Khan and that’s why he needs to take the fight quick before Kell actually knows what he’s got.

“Where everybody else can see it, he (Brook) doesn’t really realise how dangerous his armoury is.”
