Brook warns Gavin his belt is going nowhere

Updated 11th April 2015

Kell Brook has warned Frankie Gavin to “be careful what you wish for’” ahead of their world title showdown on May 30.

The Sheffield welterweight star defends his IBF crown against the fellow Brit at The O2 in London, live on Sky Sports Box Office, and is ready to make another “statement”.

“Frankie wanted this fight for a long time and now he’s got it,” Brook said.

“He's a classy boxer and I think we will see the best of him and that will bring the best out in me – but Frankie, be careful what you wish for. He's in with ‘The Special One’ now and my belt is going nowhere.”

Kell defended his belt for the first time with a spectacular four round destruction of challenger Jo Jo Dan in his hometown of Sheffield on March 28.

The Ingle Gym star floored the mandatory challenger four times inside four rounds before the Romanian’s corner pulled their man out.

‘The Special One’ has told his promoter Eddie Hearn that he wants to box as soon as possible, and now he fights in the all-British World title bout in London.

“I've been out for too long with the leg, I asked Eddie to get me right back out and Eddie has delivered for me,” Kell said.

“Everyone loves a British World title fight and this is going to be right up there as a classic.

“I am back in training and working very hard, I want to make another statement on May 30.

“I want to keep the momentum going and get back out there in front of the fans and show them what I have got. It's a short-lived career and I think I am in my prime now. I'm 34-0 and I want to go to 35-0 in spectacular fashion and then the world is my oyster.”

Gavin has other ideas however and is determined to take full advantage of his first World title shot against an opponent he has long wanted to face.

“This is a very winnable fight for me,” said Gavin.

“I have to turn up and do what I have been doing what I have been doing in the gym and I think he is in for a hard night. I have to thank Kell for the shot but I will be doing everything in my power to take that title off him.

“On my day I can beat anyone. If I win this fight, any fight in the division is there for me down the line. I have wanted a World title fight for a long time and I am not going to let it go now. This is not about money, it's about winning a World title – I am ready to make a real statement.”

Brook and Gavin top the bill with two more World title clashes in Kevin Mitchell’s challenge against Jorge Linares for the WBC Lightweight crown and Lee Selby’s attempt to wrestle the IBF Featherweight title from Evgeny Gradovich.

Also on the bill London 2012 Olympic champion Anthony Joshua MBE faces his toughest test against Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson, John Ryder and Nick Blackwell clash for the vacant British Middleweight title, Scotty Cardle faces Craig Evans for the vacant British Lightweight title and Dave Ryan defends his Commonwealth Light Welterweight crown against John Wayne Hibbert.

Tickets are now on general sale for the bumper night of boxing at The O2 with tickets priced £40, £60, £80, £100 and £200 available from and on 0844 856 0202. The £400 VIP packages are exclusively available through
