Ajisafe ready for anyone after Commonwealth win

Updated 14th June 2015

Ajisafe feels he is “ready for anyone” after dominant fourth round knockout of Daniel Wanyonyi in Bristol.

The Ingle Gym light-heavyweight added the Commonwealth crown to his Lonsdale belt in emphatic fashion and believes the time is right to step up in class.

“I’m elated to get my hands on this title,” Bob said.

“From this I’m looking to progress and hopefully get myself into the top light-heavyweight rankings and I’m ready for a test now, ready to step up, I’m ready for anyone.”

Bob took charge from the first round, immediately taking the centre of the ring and throwing solid right jabs.

Looking strong and confident, Ajisafe began to open up with flurries of rights and lefts.

Wanyonyi struggling with the size and reach advantage, lands a firm right to the body, but Ajisafe is unfazed.

Desperately lunging forward Wanyonyi misses his target and is tagged with a hook before taking two right jabs and a solid straight left.

Moving into the second Bob continues to set the pace from the centre of the ring.

Growing in confidence a flurry of rights and lefts followed by a left hook sends Wanyonyi crashing to the canvas for the first time in the fight.

Beating the count, the Kenyan fighter desperately covers up as Bob goes looking for the stoppage.

Solid jabs landing and occasional straight lefts, Leeds man Ajisafe was measuring his shots and cutting off the ring to land lefts and rights, as blood begins to stream from Wanyonyi’s nose.

Still struggling to cope with the bigger size and strength of Ajisafe in the third, Wanyonyi lunges in and is caught with a solid left hand.

A more measured and calculated Ajisafe continues to land flush rights and lefts.

By the fourth Wanyonyi begins to throw more shots in an attempt to stem the tide, but is just too small to make an impression.

Sensing a stoppage, Ajisafe opens up, firing left and right hands crashing in and forcing Wanyonyi to take a knee.

Failing to beat the count, referee Howard Foster waves off the contest 1minute 15seconds into the fourth round, leaving Wanyonyi with his seventh professional defeat and Ajisafe with his fourth stoppage win in as many fights.

“I’ve been in there with the likes of Dean Francis, those seasoned veteran fighters and I think I’ve got into my groove,” Bob said.

He continues: “I was focused on getting the job done.

“Because he was an unknown quantity, I’d never seen him box before but I knew he was going to be tough.

“I knew I could get my boxing going and I knew once I’d hit him, once he’d felt my power, I knew I could put him down and I knew I could hurt him.

“I knew it was only going to be a matter of time before I finished him - I didn’t have to rush in I just had to sit behind my boxing.

“I’ve boxed all the top guys around and that’s why I’m on this level now and looking to progress further than that level now.

“I’m elated to win this title and it’s onwards and upwards from here, I want to thank all of my sponsors and I’d also like to thank the fans and Mick Hennessy for putting this fight on

“I’m looking to progress now and break into the top 10 and big things coming for Bob Ajisafe, watch this space.”

Trainer Dominic Ingle said: “We knew he (Wanyonyi) was tough, we looked at his record and he’s had a good couple of wins and a good couple of knockouts, but Bob’s had fantastic preparation.”

He continues: “He was over in Canada a couple of weeks back sparring Arthur Beterbiev. A tough kid, knocking everybody out and if he hits you, you go to sleep and Bob was out-boxing him.

“Tonight this kid was tough and strong, but we knew as long as Bob stuck to his jab and his boxing he’d be out of danger and finish off stopping the kid.

“I always tell them, train hard, fight easy and he was over in America when Kell Brook won his world title fight, helping Kell out there – we take the team everywhere, he helps Kell, Kell helps him, all the lads help each other.

“When you’ve seen people fighting at that level, when he was in America and we saw Kell Brook win the world title fight, Bob Ajisafe, you could see him looking and thinking ‘I’m next’ but nobody wants to fight this kid.

“He’s awkward, he’s gangly, he’s very strong and we’re just looking for some challenges now and we’re looking to move him forward.

“If we’re offered a world title fight we’ll take it, it’s as simple as that – he’s 30-years-old, he’s coming to his peak, he’s maturing and we need to take the opportunities that are coming.”
